Auto Clip Kills: Tools That Find Every Kill in a VOD
Medal advertises clipping for over a thousand games. Its own support page lists fifteen where kills actually clip themselves. That gap — between what the marketing counts and what the software can detect — is the whole story of how to auto clip kills, and every vendor on this page has its own version of it.
The gap is mechanical, and no product page wants to spell it out: there are three completely different ways a tool can know a kill happened, and each one fits a different kind of player. One hooks the game while you play. One uploads your footage and runs AI on a server. One scans a video file already sitting on your PC. Which mechanism a tool uses decides everything downstream — which games work, whether last night's recording can be rescued, where the clip starts, and where your footage ends up.
Full disclosure before we start: we build one of the three — GameClipper Advanced, a local VOD scanner for Windows. This page still plays it straight. By the end you will know which of the three approaches is yours.
What Auto Clipping Actually Means (and the Question Nobody Answers)
Auto clipping is any system that finds your kills and cuts them into clips without you pressing a hotkey. Simple promise. Behind it sit three completely different architectures, and no page ranking for this keyword bothers to separate them:
- Process-hooking live recorders (Medal, Outplayed, NVIDIA Highlights) run while you play and listen to the game itself — its event API, log files, or replay system. When the game reports a kill, they save the last few seconds from a rolling buffer.
- Cloud AI VOD processors (Eklipse, Clypse, StreamLadder) take footage after the fact — usually via a Twitch or YouTube link — upload it to their servers, and run detection models over the video and audio.
- Local VOD scanners (GameClipper Advanced) run computer vision over a video file on your own PC, reading the on-screen kill feed frame by frame the way you would — at scan speed instead of watch speed.
Hold onto that split. Every strength and every dealbreaker in the rest of this guide traces straight back to which architecture a tool uses.
Architecture 1: Live Recorders That Hook the Game
These are the tools most people picture when they say auto clipping. They sit in the background during your session, subscribe to game events, and save a clip the instant a kill fires. When the integration exists, detection is effectively perfect — the software is not guessing from pixels; the game literally told it.
The same architecture carries two structural limits that no marketing page leads with. The recorder must be running before the play happens, so it can do nothing for footage you already have. And every single game needs its own integration, which somebody has to build and then keep working through every patch.
Medal.tv
Medal is the biggest name in clipping, and for live capture it is genuinely slick: free recording, instant sharing, a social library built around clips. The detection story needs a closer read, though.
- How it detects: game event hooks and in-game replay systems — several supported titles require Replays enabled in the game for auto clipping to work at all.
- The supported-games reality: Medal markets clipping for 1,000+ games, but that number is manual hotkey clipping. Its own support article on automatic event detection — current as we write this — lists 15 auto-clip titles: Rocket League, League of Legends, GTA V, Dota 2, Roblox, PUBG, Counter-Strike 2, Fortnite, War Thunder, EA Sports FC Online, Rematch, REPO, RuneScape: Dragonwilds, YAPYAP, and Valorant.
- Everything else: you are pressing the hotkey yourself, same as Game Bar.
- The catch: auto clipping is Windows-only and live-only, and Medal's support doc warns that in-game Streamer Mode obfuscates the data it reads — turn it on and detection can quietly stop.

Outplayed (Overwolf)
Outplayed is the main live alternative, built on Overwolf's game-events API. It claims automatic capture on 70+ games, with per-event toggles — kills, deaths, assists, victories — so you can save exactly the event types you want. It is free with ads; a small monthly subscription removes them.
The catch: it is an always-on overlay platform running alongside your game, which is exactly the kind of background load competitive players prune. And the same architecture rules apply: live-only, and any game off the supported list drops you back to manual clipping.
Insights.gg
Insights.gg does live capture with event detection too, but its center of gravity is team VOD review — organizing scrims, drawing on frames, sharing timestamped comments. The catch: if you want montage clips rather than review sessions, you are using a coaching tool sideways, and it shares the live-only limitation of everything in this category.
NVIDIA Highlights and SteelSeries Moments
NVIDIA Highlights is the free baseline: the game developer integrates NVIDIA's SDK, and the game itself triggers a save on kills or multikills. Free with a GeForce GPU, zero effort — for the short list of games whose developers integrated it and still maintain it. The catch: when a patch breaks the integration there is nothing you can do but wait, which is why NVIDIA Highlights not working is a perennial search. SteelSeries Moments took the same integrate-per-game approach with the same ceiling.
Notice what every tool in this category shares: none of them can answer the question that probably brought you here. The kills are already recorded. The session is over. A live recorder that was not running has nothing to give you — I forgot to clip it has no fix in this architecture.
Architecture 2: Cloud AI That Clips on Someone Else's Servers
The second architecture works after the fact, which sounds like the fix — but read the flow carefully. You connect a Twitch, Kick, or YouTube account (or paste a VOD link), the service pulls the footage to its servers, AI models flag candidate highlights, and you review the results in a web dashboard, usually formatted for Shorts and TikTok.
Eklipse.gg
Eklipse is the best-known cloud clipper, aimed squarely at streamers. It processes your stream VOD after the broadcast ends and claims its AI reads kill-feed cues and audio peaks to find highlights in FPS titles. Its marketing says auto-clip in 60 seconds; in practice you are uploading or linking hours of footage, and the wait scales with VOD length and whatever queue you share with every other user. Pricing is freemium: a limited free tier, with the full feature set behind a subscription.
The catch: the clip timing is fixed. If the AI cut a clip two seconds too late — after your first kill of the triple — you edit it by hand or reprocess; there is no dial to re-cut everything with more lead-in. Local files from ShadowPlay or OBS are a second-class citizen in a workflow built around stream links. And your footage is, by definition, on their servers. Clypse, StreamLadder ClipGPT, and Sizzle
The paste-a-link generation leans on different signals: audio spikes, chat activity, facecam reactions, with confidence scores and a review-first workflow. That works for streamer moments. The catch: none of it is reading game data, so a quiet triple kill with no mic spike and no chat reaction is invisible — and local MP4 support is weak or absent across the category.
The Powder Lesson
Powder was one of the most promising AI clippers in this category until it shut down in 2025. When a cloud tool dies, your workflow — and anything living on its servers — dies with it. That risk is structural, not bad luck, and it is why we keep a running guide to local replacements for Powder.gg.
The honest fit: if you already stream and your VODs live on Twitch anyway, cloud clipping is real convenience — the processing happens while you sleep. If your footage is a folder of local recordings, you would be uploading gigabytes to rent detection your own PC could do.
Architecture 3: Scan the VOD Locally on Your Own PC
The third architecture drops both the live requirement and the upload. This is what we build — GameClipper Advanced, a Windows 10/11 desktop app — so this section is us describing our own tool, with the same honesty we gave everyone else.
GameClipper is not a recorder. You record with whatever you already use — NVIDIA App or ShadowPlay, OBS, Xbox Game Bar, a capture card — and import the file. That one design choice is the whole point: any footage, from any source, from any day, works.
Setup is a one-time calibration per game: draw a box around the on-screen kill feed, capture your in-game name, and save it as a reusable profile.

The scan then walks the entire VOD with computer vision, flagging every kill in the feed. Multiple matching modes include OCR name confirmation — the scanner reads the killer's name on each feed line and keeps only yours, which is how it clips your kills and not your teammates' at near-zero false positives. Everything runs 100% locally: no upload queue, and footage never leaves your machine. The catch — because we owe ourselves the same bullet everyone else got: it needs a visible on-screen kill feed, so games or modes that hide the feed will not detect. One reading note: supported-game lists move — Medal's support page carries a last-modified date and the list has grown before. Treat every claimed count as the vendor's number on the day you check it.
Which Approach Fits Which Player
Strip the marketing and the decision is short:
- You play the big supported titles and want zero-thought live clips. Fortnite, Rocket League, Valorant, CS2 — Medal or Outplayed is genuinely the right call. Accept the trade: an always-on app while you play, and nothing for footage recorded without it.

- You have a folder of ShadowPlay or OBS recordings, or you play games no list supports. Local VOD scanning is the only architecture shaped like your problem. This is our lane, and it is also the only lane where offline privacy and one-time pricing exist at all.

Console and Mac: The Part Every List Skips
No live recorder in Architecture 1 runs on a PS5 or Xbox — consoles do not allow background process hooks, full stop. The workaround is the file route: record on the console or through a capture card, move the file to a PC, and scan it locally. Mac is thinner still: the cloud tools work in a browser, but the live recorders and our scanner are Windows software. If you edit on a Mac, cloud clipping or moving files to a Windows machine are the honest options — nobody in this market serves macOS natively yet.
